Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for a variety of engineering duties including design of new plants and plant upgrades, and continuous improvement of existing facilities in safety, cost, quality, and capacity. This position will be a technical expert in the process chemistry and production processes at REG facilities, and have expertise in process modeling and emergency pressure relief. Management of small to medium size capital projects may also be required. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Identify ways to optimize plant processes and implement changes to enhance plant safety and profitability
  • Assist plants with debottlenecking, troubleshooting and investigating quality excursions
  • Utilize Aspen process modeling to improve current operations and design new equipment
  • Development and maintenance of process safety information including P&IDs, material and energy balances, and pressure relief design
  • Support efforts of project start-up crews and support teams as needed, providing on-going technical support with an emphasis on minimizing down time and maximizing plant efficiency
  • Train personnel on proper techniques in operations, equipment operations, equipment maintenance, testing, and other areas as necessary
  • Provide technical support and perform audits of safety, quality and operations management systems
  • Become proficient in utilization of plant data historian programs such as Plant Information (PI)
  • Lead or be a member of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) teams
  • Specify new process equipment including updating/revising equipment specification sheets
  • Perform data and statistical analysis to make sound process decisions
  • Develop in depth expertise on the processes and equipment used such as reactors, agitators, heat exchangers, pumps, filters, and centrifuges

Travel

  • Represent REG at technical conferences and events as well as training on different equipment or processes
  • Travel to potential plant acquisition targets or technology provider facilities to perform technical due diligence
  • Travel to plants as required for process support or project support

Support Function

  • Conduct analyses to identify potential opportunities for improving operations with upgrades that enhance throughput or efficiency
  • Prepare budget capital cost and justification for use in project planning
  • Provide technical expertise in support of Research & Development department

Development and Evaluation Functions

  • Review installation of process piping and equipment to ensure all items are installed per the technical drawings
  • Specify equipment and obtain price quotations for new or replacement equipment
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of operation manuals as necessary
  • Use computers and computer systems to set up functions, enter data, design models to simulate physical processes, and process information
  • Design bid packages and evaluate and review project costs and budgets with the contractor
  • Assist in design review phase for construction of new plants and plant upgrades
  • Evaluate contractor drawings such as P&ID’s, mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, architectural, and general layout
  • Monitor contractor progress throughout the construction process including a final review of contractor work before the contractor leaves the site
  • Coordinate with contractors to accommodate design changes made during construction
  • Evaluate and ensure safety procedures are being followed in plant operations and encourage others to do the same

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Required: 4 year bachelor’s degree – Chemical Engineering, or related degree 

Experience Required: 0-7 years in a process-related industry, preferably in biodiesel, edible oils, petroleum, petrochemical, ethanol, or other renewable fuels industries preferred
