Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

This position involves a variety of engineering duties, including becoming the technical expert of the mechanical systems and components within a biodiesel plant, and contributing to the design review process for new plants.  Additionally, this position will provide operational support to existing plants, as well as develop preventative maintenance and reliability programs for facilities within the Renewable Energy Group network. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Key Accountabilities:

Technical Plant Support

  • Identify, specify and design new equipment as needed for repairs/replacements/upgrades
  • Assist with routine troubleshooting, equipment operation, product quality and process issues
  • Assist plant management with Management of Change, Process Safety Management, etc. as needed

Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor process yields, chemical usage, product quality, energy usage, throughput (including new feedstock types/mixes), and plant safety
  • Determine and implement ways to improve the above items

Technology Development Support

  • Assist in technical/economical due diligence of new technologies/processes
  • Lab/pilot scale technology development and scale-up
  • IP review and development
  • Travel to facility as needed to monitor project activity/progress
Other frequent duties:
  • Capital project support
  • Assist Construction & Technology (C&T) group and outside contractors with plant upgrade projects
  • Assist in implementing new policies, training, etc. at plant level based on “corporate level” initiatives
Perform other duties as assigned


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 Education Required: 4 year bachelor’s degree – Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineer, Agricultural Engineering, Biological Engineering or related degree  

Required coursework: Material and Energy Balances, Fluids (Flow or Dynamics), Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Controls, and advanced Chemistry with associated lab work (Organic, Analytical, or similar)

** Engineer-In-Training (EIT), Masters or Professional Engineer license is a plus

 Experience Required:  2-4 years in a process-related industry, preferably in biodiesel, edible oils, petroleum, petrochemical, ethanol, or other renewable fuels industries preferred

 Skills Required

Advanced Excel skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Extensive math and basic financial analysis abilities

Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, Visio)

Strong organization skills

Strong technical background

Enterprise-level databases (JD Edwards, Maximo, SAP, etc.)

 Special skills or knowledge preferred:

AutoCAD

Knowledge of biodiesel production and related processes

Experience with various software programs

Experience with process simulations (Chemcad or Aspen)

Process data historians (PI ProcessBook)

3-D modeling (SolidWorks, Autodesk, Navisworks)

Office VBA

Microsoft Access

SQL Server experience

PDF reviewing/editing software (example: Blubeam Revu)
