Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

REG is seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Associate Process Development Engineer to join its Fermentation Process Development team. The primary responsibility of this position includes the design of, execution, analysis, and reporting of shake flask and bioreactor experiments to further our research efforts towards the commercialization of microbial derived renewable fuels and chemicals. This position may serve as a senior member of a two person team in the fermentation development group, and is responsible for scheduling and coordination of various activities and the development and mentoring of a more junior position on the team. Finally, this position is expected to contribute significant background experience to our knowledge base, and will propose, validate, and deploy various process improvements on an ongoing basis for the continuous development of our group’s core capabilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Experimental design, execution, and data analysis of completed experiments within the scope of relevant corporate projects and goals;
  • Team time and resource management within the scope of the weekly experimental plan, and the mentoring and development of junior personnel;
  • Assemble, operate, sample, and harvest / turnaround development-scale bioreactors on a weekly basis;
  • In-process broth sample preparation, analysis, and accurate recording of results;
  • Strain purification, propagation, storage, and stability testing under aseptic conditions;
  • Mastery of fermentation and analytical equipment operation, equipment maintenance, and basic troubleshooting and repair;
  • Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to others in the company to disseminate critical data to others, and expedite the development of our integrated biofuels production process in a collaborative team environment;
  • Familiarization with current literature and the state of the art fermentation science to continuously improve REG’s core capabilities, and the evaluation and improvement of various experimental and analytical methods and techniques to improve experimental throughput and data accuracy.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Required:  Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical / Biochemical / Biological Engineering or Biotechnology, or a Master of Science in similar disciplines.

Experience Required:  Minimum of two years previous experience in fermentation process development at laboratory scale (w/ Master degree), or five years of the same (w/ Bachelor degree). 

Skills Required:  Strong theoretical understanding of microbiology and biochemical engineering, with an emphasis on fermentation process development. Demonstrated expertise in various microbiology methods and aseptic techniques, and a fundamental understanding of various analytical methods relevant to the fermentation sciences.  Strong quantitative skills, and familiarity with and demonstrated application of statistical theory for data analysis.
