Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE: The purpose of this job is to assist the Corporate Affairs Department in the creation and implementation of a strategic, multi-faceted corporate affairs program focused on state government activities in the states we have facilities and do business in as well as in states where we have developing markets. The position will also assist in the development of a comprehensive government affairs strategy, oversee the implementation process of that strategy in key states, and also provide assistance in communications, grass roots programs, and special events as needed. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Policy Development:

  • Assist in the development of strategic state affairs plan(s) to support the organization’s mission, goals and objectives in key states 
  • Build and foster long-term working relationships with various government agencies, officials, legislative leaders and opinion leaders including media, members of the community, and other organizations 
  • Build and foster collaborative relationships with other departments within the organization to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, products, and services

Government Affairs:

  • Develop plans to address challenges posed to key state biodiesel policies including mandates, credits, retail incentives, and other similar programs 
  • Develop plans to properly address the implementation of other state programs 
  • Build out a state regulatory strategy that strengthens relationships and ensures the company is not disadvantaged by state agency rulemakings; actively monitor regulatory requirements for filing and deadline requirements applicable programs 
  • Manage government affairs programs in key states and assist in development of overall state affairs strategy 
  • Liaison with key state trade associations
  • Develop education and outreach to legislators, policy makers and industry influencers 

Internal Corporate Affairs:

  • Ensure speeches, presentations and information match corporate messaging 

Media Relations:

  • Assist in the development of material for special media events including legislator briefings, facility tour events, writers’ seminars, press events, etc. 

Other frequent duties:

  • Mentor department staff to integrate their efforts on all corporate affairs programs 
  • Willingness to provide personal contact information to management or customers on an as needed basis for official business purposes 
  • Travel on behalf of the company as needed Perform other duties as assigned 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education Required: 4 year bachelor’s degree – Political Science or related degree *Advanced degree preferred 

Experience Required: 10 - 15 years in a government affairs role 

Skills Required: Strong verbal and written communication skills Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) 

Special skills or knowledge preferred: Knowledge in both the government/legislative Knowledge in the private sector as a lobbyist or public affairs manager
