Job Description


The purpose of this position is to support the development of commercially scalable processes for the recovery of biochemicals and biofuels from fermentation broth.  This hands-on position requires an in-depth knowledge of various lab and pilot scale equipment and process systems, a desire and ability to work as a team to conduct various lab and pilot scale development activities, and to support process development engineers.



  • Trouble-shooting, repair and maintenance of various reaction/separation equipment such as centrifuges, distillation unit and reaction systems
  • In-house construction of lab and pilot scale reaction/separation systems
  • Conduct the day-to-day operations of lab and pilot scale process development in fermentation harvest, refining of biochemicals and biofuels and waste-stream processing
  • Conduct various wet assays to characterize biochemicals and biofuels
  • Help identify gaps in downstream process development and implement improvement programs for safety, efficiency, equipment reliability
  • Assists process development in developing scalable processes with improved product yield and reduced costs for manufacturing systems
  • Research and implement new methods and technologies to enhance operations

  • Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to expedite the development of the integrated biochemical and biofuels production process
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
  • Demonstrate success in technical proficiency, application of scientific theory, collaboration with others and independent thought
Other frequent duties:

  • Participate in development of patent applications
  • Interfaces with various departments and serves as internal consultant
  • Advise R&D management on projects, research and development opportunities as needed
Perform other duties as assigned


Education Required:  Master’s degree - Chemical Engineering or related degree

Experience Required:  3-5 years of experience in downstream process development of biochemicals and biofuels produced via fermentation

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Extensive math and accounting skills

Advanced Excel skills

Special skills or knowledge preferred:

In-depth knowledge of various lab and pilot scale equipment and reaction/separation systems
